abstract = "The topography, represented by digital elevation models (DEM), has
a great influence in the physical and ecological processes in
watersheds. DEM are frequently obtained by topographic maps and
recently by remote sensing. The surface moisture accumulation can
be modeled using the topographic wetness index (TWI) obtained from
the MDE and represents the most susceptible sites to saturation
and consequently surface runoff formation. This processes is
relevant in the soil and water conservation planning, mainly in
locales where agricultural practices are predominated. This study
aims to evaluate the TWI obtained by different MDEs for the
Araqu{\'a} River basin located in the Midwest S{\~a}o Paulo
state, Brazil. The SRTM, ASTER GDEM and MDE products interpolated
from the topographic maps, with 30x30m spatial resolution, were
used as a database. The TWI derived from these are called
TWI_SRTM, TWI_ASTER and TWI_CARTA. From the analysis of the
results it was observed that the minimum, maximum and range values
were similar for the three products, for spatial and frequency
distribution of the values the TWI_SRTM and TWI_ASTER products
demonstrate to be equivalent. Thus, the MDEs obtained by remote
sensing are promising to obtain secondary topographic indexes such
as TWI, especially for sites with no topographic maps.",
